Tanzania Health and Medical Education Foundation (TAHMEF): Ahadi (Tanzania)
TAHMEF is a youth-led organisation, focused on improving the health and well-being of the Tanzanian people, and ensuring accessibility of healthcare for all. At present, there is growing concern regarding the mental health of youths, with the healthcare system being unable to keep up with increasing demand for support in this area, with there only being 0.3 mental health workers per 100,000 people in the community.
Taking an evidence-based approach, the Ahadi project aims to reduce the risk of mental illness, as well as empower young people to adopt healthy lifestyle choices. This will be achieved through providing a digital education toolkit to local schools built upon therapeutic horticulture, that will encourage students and teachers to participate in gardening activities. By working through the modules set in the programme, it is intended that participants learn skills related to communication, relationship building, emotional recognition and expression and healthy eating, as well as horticulture itself.
