YHP TURKEY – Hey Youth! Take Action!

Location

Eight secondary schools across Turkey.

Timing

2018 – 2020

The local context

The incidence of type 2 diabetes is rising among children and adolescents across Turkey. This is in part attributable to a sharp increase in obesity rates. Obesity in young people is associated with physical inactivity and poor dietary habits.

Our objectives

Provide 11,000 freshmen students in 55 schools across nine cities with healthy living information so they can make choices that will help them become ‘healthy adults’.

Our focus

Healthy diet and physical activity.

Our programme

Workshops and seminars will be held in each of 55 schools to raise awareness about the importance of a healthy diet and physical activity.

Students from each school will be encouraged to form groups and make videos under the supervision of their physical education (PE) teachers and school counsellors. The videos will be reviewed by a ‘project jury’ and prizes awarded for the best entries.

Pre- and post-tests will monitor the change in students’ level of awareness.

Our achievements

The project was launched with a press conference on 23 February 2018.
