Improving community health and building resilient communities (Dominican Republic)

Communities in rural areas suffer from high levels of deprivation ranging from lack of affordable healthcare and poor access to education and sanitation, to discrimination and unemployment.

We are promoting healthy lifestyles and behaviour change in 16 targeted rural communities in Villa Montellano, with 30 young Community Health Workers (CHWs) leading Community Support Groups that educate young people about healthy habits and diet, physical activity, mental health, community development, and social empowerment.

This builds on HHIF’s virtual support network, which provides counselling and support services through hotlines and instant messaging applications, and CHWs will form a Community Youth Council with the aim to scale this nationally.
